Exploring Culture Metrics and Behaviours Aligned to Business Risk

Find out how a behavioural approach that looks at people and the place is helping organisations target their interventions to manage business risks from financial fraud to ineffective performance management processes and employee inclusion.

The regulator says they are going to tell me if my culture is broken.  So, what do I do now?

Consider the following to get a sense of the risks of failing to manage financial misconduct:  2.4x growth in customer complaints received by financial firms since 2014; £22.2bn paid by banks to customers in compensation since 2011; €200bn paid in fines and remediation by US and European banks over a five year period.

And now the regulator has added broken cultures to the factors they will assess when regulating banks and other financial companies.  So, people data have entered the risk and compliance arena.  The challenge facing the finance sector is that the regulator will tell them when their culture is broken but not what their culture should look like or how to evaluate whether their culture is fit for purpose.

This session is about risk and how to apply behavioural data to help answer the exam question of “Is our culture fit for purpose?”

Specifically, we will describe how a behavioural lens has been applied to financial crime, how that insight has been used to develop targeted interventions and how all of this can be factored into organisational transformation to tie risk management into people programmes.

Overall, this session is about how people data with the right lens is now becoming a cornerstone for managing business risks and that was recognised by being awarded the 2017 People’s Prize by Wharton Business School for innovation in analytics.

  • How a behavioural lens has been applied to financial crime frameworks and to help banks understand what to focus on and where in organisational transformation
  • How data on the people (how they typically behave) and the place (how the organisation typically behaves) has been used to identify which behaviours are present and need to be sustained, and which behaviours are absent and need to be strengthened
  • How that insight has been used to develop targeted interventions and provide a tangible articulation of culture and transformation programmes that these organisations can now share with the regulator
