Identifying Employee Traits and Behaviours that Impact the Performance of the Business

How Philips are analysing behaviours and correlating them with financial outcomes, which allows the nurturing of the real positive traits, and also to show bottom line impact at board level.

The Context

  • One business unit was struggling
  • Some changes were made, but performance wasn't greatly affected
  • If it is true that people drive business performance, what is it specifically about people that drives it?
  • In a company of several thousand people, how can it be identified - with reasonable certainty - the behaviours of the people that are helping the company succeed, how can this be demonstrated, and how can these behaviours then be nurtured in others?

The Project

  • Each year a full PPM round takes place; managers and peers give feedback on each person, and most of that is on behaviour
  • Text analysis - proprietary code, based on marketing analytics used to analyse all the views that customers express publicly about Philips' products
  • The same approach is used on Performance Analytics
  • Certain behaviours were identified, and it was shown how they impact the PPM score
  • Individuals and teams now look at the behaviours they exhibit, and see how they are contributing - or otherwise - to business goals.

Franc is a senior business consultant with a passion for improving business performance. He has worked at Philips since 2014, initially starting as Global Controller for the Human resources function, and spent considerable time re-designing various HR departments.

In 2016 Franc was promoted to Senior Business Consultant for the newly formed People Analytics team, being solely responsible for all process and project management.

Prior to Philips, Franc worked for a variety of global organisations, including ABN AMRO Bank, NXP Semiconductor and Eiffel, a boutique consultancy firm.

He started his career in the auditing function where he achieved his dream to work and travel abroad, experiencing international business.

He enjoys helping organisations in achieving their goals by means of programme and project management and applying Lean and Six Sigma. Franc studied Business Administration at the Rotterdam School of Management, has a postdoctoral degree in Internal Audit, is a certified Lean Black Belt and certified project manager.
