3 Minutes With… Mike Friedman, Data Scientist for People Analytics, Solvay

In advance of his presentation at People Analytics World 2018 in April, Mike Friedman shares a few thoughts on his experiences and predictions in HR Analytics...

Michael is a quantitative problem-solver with a passion for analysis of small and big data, and in particular, using the power of analytical tools to gain insight and guide decision making. He has a wide variety of analytical experience in the market research, marketing and banking sectors.

His mission is to bring both statistical and business sense to the analysis of HR data at Solvay. He strongly believes that the key to better people decisions lies in being wise, not clever, with data.

For how long has your work involved analytics, either directly or in project leadership?

15 years.

For how long have you worked in the HR domain?

5 months.

How well do you feel People Analytics is progressing?

Hard to say because I'm just new to this branch of data science.

What have been the greatest challenges that you've faced within People Analytics?

Picking the right projects.

What are your predictions for 2018 and beyond? Where are things heading?

Depending on the organization and their existing level of sophistication, there are a million things to do. The challenge is in identifying the "right" projects for your organization. There's no universal answer, and the possibilities are nearly endless.

It takes both analytical and business sense to identify the right problems, and good IT support to deploy developed solutions to the organization as a whole. For people who get this right, the future looks bright.
